Grundwortstellung (Subjekt-Verb-Objekt)

German main clauses follow a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order in their basic form. The verb is always the second element in a statement — this is called the 'V2 rule'. If you begin a sentence with something other than the subject (e.g. a time expression), the subject moves to third position, right after the verb.
- Ich kaufe Brot.
- Maria trinkt Kaffee.
- Heute kaufe ich Brot.
- Jeden Morgen trinkt Maria Kaffee.
- Wir besuchen meine Eltern.
- Am Wochenende besuchen wir meine Eltern.
